24 Home Remedies To Treat Goiter

A goiter refers to the enlargement of the thyroid gland located around the neck region. It is not a tumor or cancer.

Iodine deficiency is the most common cause of goiter worldwide. The body needs iodine for the proper production of thyroid hormone. If you do not consume enough iodine in your diet, the thyroid gland enlarges to capture all the iodine it can so that it can make the right quantity of thyroid hormone.

Americans often use iodized salt in their cooking. As such, goiter, caused by lack of iodine, is not common amongst Americans.

Other causes of goiter include; cigarette smoking, an autoimmune disorder, certain foods such as peanuts, soy), certain drugs such as lithium, and infections.

Simple goiter is most common amongst; people over 40, women, and people with family history of goiter.

Some goiters are asymptomatic i.e. they manifest no symptoms. However, when there are symptoms, the symptoms could include; swelling of the neck, difficulty in swallowing, hoarseness of voice and feeling of tightness around the neck.

Below are 24 home remedies and natural treatments for goiter;

1. Castor Oil

The anti-inflammatory properties of castor oil help in reducing the swelling associated with goiter in an effective way. Put some castor oil on your fingertips and apply it to the entire neck area. Massage in a gentle circular motion. Do this every night before going to bed and let the oil stay overnight.

A study, published in the journal Mediators Of Inflammation in 2000, concluded that ricinoleic acid, a major component of castor oil, could be regarded as anti-inflammatory agent suitable for peripheral applications.

2. Iodine

One of the main causes of the development of goiter is a deficiency of iodine in the body. It is important to consume the recommended dose of 150mg of iodine every day. Include foods such as eggs, navy beans, yogurt, kale, baked potato (with its skin on), cow’s milk, cranberries and iodized salt. Avoid consuming iodine beyond the recommended daily dose as it may also increase goiter.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar stimulates the absorption of iodine by the body and reduces the symptoms associated with goiter. The mildly acidic nature, of ACV, also aids in maintaining an ideal pH for a healthy body. Simply add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and a little honey in a glass full of warm water. Stir well and drink it every morning on an empty stomach.

4. Dandelion

Dandelion has been used in Ayurveda, for many years, to relieve the symptoms of goiter. Take 2-3 leaves of the herb and apply clarified butter on one of its sides. Now gently warm the leaves and place it over the goiter. Wrap a bandage or use a tape to secure it in its position so that the herb stays over the goiter for a few hours. Alternatively, you can also make a paste of dandelion leaves and add some butter to it. Warm it and spread it over the goiter. Allow it to stay for 15 minutes. Do either of these remedies twice every day for 15 days for alleviating the symptoms.

5. Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay is known to pull out the toxins from the goiter and help in relieving the swelling in an incredible way. Simply add enough water to bentonite clay to make a fine paste. Spread it evenly on the neck area and allow it to dry. Rinse thoroughly with water and repeat it after 2-3 days.

6. Watercress

Watercress is another great herb for treating goiter. It is packed with iodine in addition to other essential vitamins and minerals. Simply make a paste by grinding a handful of the herb and spreading it on your neck region. Allow it to stay for 20 minutes and wash off thoroughly with water. Repeat it 2-3 times weekly. Alternatively, you may also drink a glass of water mixed with 2 tablespoons of crushed watercress twice every day for a fast relief from goiter.

7. Kanchanar

Kanchanar has been used in Ayurveda, for many years, to treat goiter. It helps in detoxifying the lymphatic system and alleviates the symptoms of goiter effectively. Take 10-15 grams of kanchanar and mix it with 160 ml of water. Boil it over medium heat until the water reduces to about 40 ml. Remove from heat and strain the liquid. Drink the concoction two times every day 30 minutes before meals. Do this continuously for 2-3 months for effective results.

8. Turmeric

Heat a cup of water in a pan and add 1/2 cup of turmeric powder in it. When it forms a thick paste, in about 5-10 minutes, add one and a half teaspoon of black pepper and 70 ml of olive oil (cold pressed) to it. Remove from flame and store it in an airtight jar. Take one teaspoon of it every day. You may store the paste in a refrigerator for 1-2 weeks.

9. Kelp

Due to its high iodine content, kelp normalizes thyroid functioning and alleviates goiter. Take powdered kelp and mix a tablespoon of it in your smoothie. Consume this smoothie to relieve the symptoms. Avoid consuming it for a long period of time as it may excessive increase the thyroid hormone levels leading to hyperthyroidism.

10. Flaxseeds

Flaxseed is another great remedy for treating goiter effectively. It acts as an anti-inflammatory agent that relieves the symptoms. Make a paste by mixing 2-3 tablespoons of ground flaxseeds with water and apply this paste to your neck region. Leave it for 20-25 minutes and rinse off thoroughly with water.

11. Green Tea

The antioxidants present in green tea are beneficial for curing goiter. Green tea is also high in fluoride which aids thyroid functioning and prevents goiter. Simply make a cup of green tea and consume it 2-3 times every day to combat the ailment.

12. Garlic And Lemon

Garlic and lemon are beneficial for the health in many ways. There are both anti-inflammatory in nature and also remove accumulated toxins from the body. Take a tablespoon of lemon juice and mix it with a crushed garlic clove and a dash of honey. Consume it first thing in the morning every day.

13. Sorrel Leaves

The green leaves of sorrel are high in iodine which helps in treating goiter. Take a handful of fresh sorrel leaves and make a paste out of it. Mix two tablespoons of olive oil with it. Apply the resultant mixture to your neck and let it stay for 25-30 minutes. Do this once daily until you see improvements.

14. Moringa

Moringa inhibits inflammation in the body and promotes healing. Take a tablespoon of moringa leaves (dried) and add it to a cup of boiling hot water. Let the leaves get infused in it for a few minutes. Strain it and drink it. Doing this once daily will balance thyroid functioning and reduce swelling of the goiter.

15. Lemon Balm Tea

Lemon balm tea is another home remedy for goiter that works. It slows down the pituitary gland functioning and reduces the levels of TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone) in the body. Boil some water in a pan and pour it in a cup. Add about 2 tablespoons of the dried herb and let it steep for a few minutes. Strain it and add a dash of honey to enhance the taste. Drink 2-3 cups of lemon balm every day to get rid of the goiter symptoms. Avoid lemon balm if you suffer from glaucoma.

16. Bugleweed Tea

Consuming bugleweed tea 3 times daily will reduce goiter symptoms by inhibiting TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone). Make the tea by putting the bugleweed in a cup of hot water and adding half a teaspoon of honey to it. Bugleweed tea contains phenolic acids, tannins, and flavonoids that help in reducing goiter.

17. Barley Water

Barley water can add much-needed antioxidants and phytonutrients in your body which aid in alleviating goiter. It also detoxifies the body naturally. All you have to do is wash 1/2 cup of barley and soak it in water. Boil it with 10 cups of water in a pan. Add grated lemon rind, 1 cup of lemon juice and a cup of sugar.
