23 Effective Home Remedies For Chickenpox

Chickenpox is a viral infection caused by the virus, varicella-zoster, in which an infected person develops itchy blisters all over their body. Chickenpox is highly contagious but usually mild. It often lasts for 10-21 days before subsiding.

Chickenpox is not as prevalent as it was in the past due to the development of chickenpox vaccine.

Chickenpox can spread through the air or through contact with an infected person’s saliva, mucus, or blister fluid.

The most common symptoms of chickenpox are the itchy rashes or blisters that appear all over the body. These symptoms usually subside within 2 weeks of their appearance.

Other symptoms of chickenpox include; loss of appetite, tiredness, headache, stomach ache, or fever.

Here are some tips and good practices, to consider, when dealing with chickenpox;

  • Avoid scratching or rubbing the itchy blisters.
  • You should opt for loose, light clothes to prevent irritating the blisters/rash.
  • You could use soothing moisturizers to soothe, soften, and cool the skin.
  • Avoid exposing your skin, especially the itchy areas, to prolonged heat and humidity.
  • Do not give ibuprofen or aspirin to someone with chickenpox. Aspirin could trigger a condition called Reye syndrome while ibuprofen could lead to severe secondary infections.

Below are home remedies for chickenpox;

1. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera cools down the inflamed and irritated skin and provides a soothing effect. Being a potent anti-inflammatory agent, aloe vera also reduces itching associated with chickenpox. For this remedy, extract some gel from a fresh aloe leaf and store it in an airtight jar. Spread it evenly on your inflamed skin. You can store the gel in the refrigerator and can use it for 7 days.

2. Oatmeal Bath

Oatmeal has a deep cleansing action on the skin which helps in preventing an infection. Grind 2 cups of oatmeal and put it in a bowl. Then, add 4 cups of water and let the oatmeal soak for some time. Transfer the mixture in a tightly secured cloth bag and put it in a bathtub filled with warm water. Now soak yourself in it for some time to relieve the discomfort.

3. Baking Soda

Baking soda is another potent ingredient that helps in soothing irritated skin and reducing itching. Prepare a bathtub by adding warm water to it. Then, add a cup of baking soda to it and mix well. You may also add a little amount of an antiseptic liquid and soak yourself in it for 10-15 minutes once every day.

4. Calamine Lotion

Take a cup of calamine lotion and add a little amount of lavender oil to it. Mix well and store it in a bottle. Apply this lotion on the spots to relieve itching and discomfort. This calamine mixture also cools down the skin for a soothing feeling. Reapply it 2-3 times in a day.

5. Lavender Oil

Lavender oil may help in soothing the skin affected with chickenpox in a natural way. Put a small amount of lavender oil in a carrier oil, such as olive oil or coconut oil, and mix well. Apply the diluted lavender oil to the rashes to soothe them and reduce itching. You may also add lavender oil to a bathtub filled with water and soak yourself in it for 10-15 minutes to relieve the discomfort.

6. Calendula

Calendula or marigold may also be used to treat itchy skin caused by chickenpox. Simply take a cup of water and add 2 tablespoons of calendula flowers to it. Also, add a teaspoon of witch hazel and mix all the ingredients well. Let it steep overnight and grind the mixture the next morning. Apply it topically on your skin rashes and allow it to dry completely.

7. Carrots And Coriander

Carrots and coriander would provide vitamin A and Vitamin C to the body which helps in boosting the immune system. Take a cup of finely chopped carrots and one and a half cups of fresh coriander leaves. Put the ingredients in water and bring it to boil. Now, reduce the heat and let it simmer for 12-15 minutes. Put off the heat and strain the liquid. Consume it once every day for about one month.

8. Jasmine

Jasmine has been used among Thai people for many years to deal with the discomfort associated with chickenpox. Pour some hot water into a cup and put a jasmine teabag in it. Let it steep for 10-12 minutes. Remove the tea bag and sip the tea 2-3 times every day.

9. Green Peas

Green peas are high in vitamins and folic acid which helps in fighting inflammations in a natural way. Take 200grams of green peas and wash them properly. Boil them with water and grind it into a thick paste. Spread the resultant paste over the rashes and let it stay for one hour. Finally wash it away using warm water.

10. Neem

Neem helps in inhibiting the varicella-zoster virus associated with chickenpox. It also helps in drying out the blisters fast thereby promoting a faster recovery from the condition. Grind a handful of fresh neem leaves to obtain a thick paste and apply it over the affected areas. Let it stay for some hours and wash it with water.

11. Ginger

Ginger promotes healing of the skin in a natural way and helps you get relief from skin irritation caused by chickenpox. Add powdered ginger to your bathtub and soak yourself in it for 15-20 minutes. Do this once every day for effective results.

14. Sandalwood Oil

The antimicrobial, as well as anti-inflammatory attributes of the sandalwood oil, makes it a good remedy for chickenpox. Mix a small amount of the oil to a teaspoon of powdered turmeric. Apply the resultant mixture to the rashes and let it stay for half an hour.  Then, wash it off with water thereafter.

15. Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil may help in healing the skin effectively. It has a hydrating action on the skin which promotes healing. Furthermore, it reduces inflammation of the skin, in a natural way, to reduce swelling and pain. Prick a few vitamin E capsules to obtain the oil and apply it topically on the sores. Be careful not to rupture the chickenpox blisters. Leave it on and reapply 2-3 times daily.

16. Salt Bath

Take half a cup of sea salt or dead sea salt and add it to your warm water bath tub. If you like, add a little quantity of lavender oil. Soak yourself in the bath for 10-15 minutes once every day. Sea salt helps in reducing inflammation and inhibits the germs that cause blisters.

17. Brown Vinegar

Prepare your bathtub by adding warm water to it. Now add a cup of brown vinegar to it and soak yourself for 12-15 minutes. Finally, rinse your body with plain water. Brown vinegar may help in healing the inflamed skin and reduce itching. Alternatively, you could use apple cider vinegar if brown vinegar is not available.

18. Thieves Oil

Thieves oil is a unique blend of 5 selected essential oils; clove oil, lemon oil, cinnamon oil, rosemary oil and eucalyptus oil that proves to be helpful in healing your skin. Thieves oil also inhibits the virus associated with chickenpox. Take a quarter cup of Epsom salt and add 3 drops each of thieves oil, melaleuca oil and lavender oil to it. Mix well and add it to your warm water bath tub. Soak your body in it for 15-18 minutes. Do this once every day.

19. Diet

It is important to maintain a simple well-balanced diet, if you have chickenpox, to boost your immunity and promote healing. Include more fruits and vegetables in your diet. Vegetable broth and chicken soup are excellent during chickenpox. You should also consume juice of carrots, coriander, and lemon to add vitamin C and vitamin A to your body. Avoid sugary food, processed foods, dairy products, meats, spicy and oily foods to prevent stress on your digestive system.

20. Vitamin D

Improving your vitamin D levels by exposing yourself to early morning sunlight may help in promoting healing. Sun rays are known to inhibit many viruses. Plus, vitamin D helps in increasing your immunity to fight the condition more effectively.

21. Basil

Basil helps in inhibiting the virus associated with chickenpox. It also reduces itching near the sores in an excellent way. Boil a handful of fresh basil leaves in water and let it simmer for 3 minutes. Put off the heat and let it steep for another 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and refrigerate it. Apply it to the blisters by soaking a clean cloth into the cooled down basil tea. Repeat the remedy once every day.

22. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial action. It can be applied topically on the skin in diluted form. For this remedy, mix a little amount tea tree oil with a tablespoon of a carrier oil such as coconut oil or olive oil. Apply it to the rashes and let it stay for 10 minutes. Wipe it off with a damp cloth thereafter.

23. Homemade Itch-Relief Cream

A homemade itch relief cream may help in dealing with chickenpox in an excellent way. Take a teaspoon each of baking soda and fine sea salt plus 2 teaspoons of bentonite clay and mix them with a tablespoon of witch hazel. Now add 5 drops, each, of peppermint oil and lavender oil. Put 2 drops, each, of clove oil, tea tree oil, and niaouli oil. Finally, add a drop of rosemary oil and 3 drops of ravensara oil. Blend all the ingredients together and apply it on the blisters 3 times in a day.
